My First Black Hat Arsenal Experience and an Exciting YouTube Experience

Getting ready to share another update from my recent Black Hat conference experience. I’ve spoken at Black Hat a few times over the past several years, but one thing I hadn’t done until this year was present at Arsenal.

For those not familiar with Black Hat’s business hall, there’s a special section called Arsenal where you can showcase open source tools that are either brand new or have just received major updates. You’re essentially launching your tool there at Arsenal. They provide you with a booth and give you an hour to demo your tool, and anyone with access to the business hall can visit Arsenal – so it’s a pretty cool setup.

Like I said, I hadn’t done it before, but I participated this year with my newly updated version of the Chasing Your Tail tool. This is the same tool I originally released and gave a talk about at Black Hat three years ago – the one that analyzes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to help determine if you’re being followed. Arsenal went really well, and I definitely plan on applying and participating again in the future.

An Exciting YouTube Experience

Here’s some really big and exciting news: David Bombal – one of the biggest tech YouTube channels out there – sent me an email before Black Hat wanting to get together, talk, and demo the tool.

The afternoon before my Arsenal demo, I sat down with David for about half an hour. We went through the origin of the tool, discussed where it came from, how it works, and did some short demos. I believe they’re actually going to release that episode on YouTube later today, so I’m super excited to check it out. I’ll watch it and post a link here once it’s live.

It’s one of those things that’s always kind of awkward – seeing and hearing yourself on video. I think anyone who’s done that knows it’s always a little weird, but I’m still incredibly excited about checking it out. I am also planning on talking with David in the future about other OSINT and privacy-related topics.
